India Vs England: Maninder Singh Makes Bold Statement On Virat Kohli

After a brilliant victory in the second Test match against England, Team India started badly in the third. On the first day of the third match, the whole team was bowled out. Only 78 runs were scored in 40.4 overs. This was disappointing after the win at Lord’s. Virat Kohli would have been disappointed with his team’s performance. Furthermore, he did not help his case much since he was poor with the bat as well.

There was a lot of criticism for the Indian captain because of this. After such a shameful performance, fans were angry. On the first day, England bowled brilliantly to dominate Indian batting. Anderson was the pick of the bowlers after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

Angry at the poor start to the third test against England, Maninder Singh reacts

The Men in Blue are struggling in the third test between India and England in the ongoing Test series. The result of the first match in the series was a draw due to rain on the fifth day of play. After winning the second game at Lord’s Cricket Ground last week, Virat Kohli’s men were in high spirits heading into the third game. After electing to bat first, India was all out for just 78 in 40.4 overs.

Virat Kohli is struggling to score big runs with the bat. James Anderson, who had his tail up right from the start of this game, made his first out after playing an expansive drive. In his opening spell, he rattled the Indian top-order and showed his class. Rohit Sharma made 19 runs after surviving 105 deliveries, making him the highest scorer of the batting lineup. The decision by Kohli to send England to bowl first sums up India’s poor performance with the bat.

As the Indian captain acknowledged, the English conditions were the most difficult to bat in, and they were unable to survive two sessions against a resurgent England bowling attack. Kohli was out for trying to drive off the outside of the stumps on James Anderson’s off-stump delivery. In four innings, Kohli scored only 69 runs.

Maninder Singh told ESPNCricinfo –

Former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh says Virat Kohli should spend some time in the middle before hitting his shots.

Before the Test match, Virat Kohli had said that in these English conditions you’ve got to keep your ego in your pocket. I think that is absolutely right.”

“If he tries to dominate like Virat Kohli usually does, these are not the pitches where he can bat like that. Needs to spend some time there as he did on the previous tour where he scored almost 600 runs. Once you know the pace and know how much the ball is seaming around, then you can carry on playing your shots.”

These are not flat Indian pitches, where you can just put your foot forward and start driving. What Kohli preached, he will have to practice. Keep your ego in your pocket.

The Story of Day 2 And Where The Game Is Heading

At the end of Day 2, England had scored 423 for the loss of eight wickets, putting them 345 runs ahead. As there is no rain forecast at Headingley for the next three days, India will have to bring their best batting performance in the second innings to save the test match. Maninder believes Kohli has not learned from his mistakes on his first tour to England in 2014.

“Virat Kohli is basically making the same mistakes. The ones that he was making on his first tour of England. He is playing away from the body. It could happen to you if you are not playing regular cricket. He got out a couple of times the same way as you did in 2014. When he just got 138 runs in ten innings.”I think things start coming back. Am I playing the wrong line? Should I be leaving these balls? All these Indian boys, in the first two Tests, were leaving balls outside the off stump. I do not know what happened in this Test match. They were wanting to play at it and paid the price for it. With Virat Kohli, he is going through a bad patch.”
