Injuries to Mark Wood have Worsened England’s Situation

The England team was defeated by 151 runs, and to make matters worse, they are already missing several fast bowlers. They may also be without Mark Wood next week after the express was injured while fielding at Lord’s. Despite this, there are questions about whether Durham’s fast bowler, whose career has been blighted by injuries, will be fit to play on Wednesday when England announces its squad.

Describing the same, England coach, Chris Silverwood informed, “The medics are working on him (Wood), we’ll find out more in the next couple of days. We will make a decision, along with him and our medics, closer to the time. But if he’s not right, he’s not right. I certainly won’t push him into playing if he tells me he’s not right. I will look after him.”

Wood’s “superb effort” was praised by Silverwood, but many felt he should have been more careful on the field. Despite losing all seven of their last Tests, England repeatedly bowled too short to Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah during their unbroken 89-run partnership. After 49 balls, India’s duo starred with the ball as England, set a target of 272, was dismissed for 120 runs.

In contrast to dismissing India’s tailenders, England’s fast bowlers were more concerned with avenging their batsman James Anderson’s rough treatment.  Silverwood, himself a former England bowler, praised Shami and Bumrah by saying: “I thought they handled the situation really well.”

Meanwhile, England’s top-order struggle continues as Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, and Haseeb Hameed saw a duck at Lord’s. Silverwood said: “You’ve got to do what’s best for the team, ultimately, and find the best way of progressing England to a place where big first-innings runs — and second-innings runs — come in on a consistent basis.”
